English Letters Department UAD Holds a Seminar on Rethinking US Imperialism in Southeast Asia

Tuesday, January 13, 2015, English Letters Department, Faculty of Literature, Culture and Communication UAD held a Seminar on “Rethinking US Imperialism in Southeast Asia” at Campus II UAD. Collaborated with American Studies Society Indonesia (ASSINDO), Michael G. Vann, Ph.D. from California State University, Sacramento, USA, was invited as the keynote speaker.

Participated by lecturers and students of Faculty of Literature, Culture and Communication, this seminar was really interesting because it presented different point of view about USA. Titled on “The American Empire Debate: Reflections on Alleged Exceptionalism and and Imperialism”, Michael G. Vann’s presentation how American build the Empire in the world from time to time and how they always deny about that.

The International Sports Competition for International Students of UAD

Futsal Competition

Sunday, December 8, 2013, Office of International Affairs UAD Cooperated with Faculty of Literature, Culture, and Communication UAD, held the International Sports Competition for international students of UAD. The Sports Competition consisted of Futsal, Basketball, Tarik Tambang, and Estafet.

The international students were divided into four groups (Yellow, Blue, Red, and Green), each group consisted of 26 to 28 students. Each group sent one Futsal team (male), one basketball team (female), two Tarik Tambang teams (one female team and one male team), and one Estafet team (mixed female and male). All international students enthusiastically played the sports game. The members of each group yelled to support their group’s team. The competition began at 8 a.m. and finished at 3 p.m. Even though all students and committee were very tired, but it’s worthy because they were all happy.

In the end of the futsal competition, the Yellow team won the Futsal game, and the Blue one became the Runner up. For the basketball competition, the Blue team won and the Yellow one became the Runner up. For Tarik Tambang, the male team of the Red group won, and the Yellow one became the Runner up, mean while the female team of the Green group won, and the Yellow one, again, became the Runner up. In the last competition, Estafet, the Green team won, and the Red one became the Runner up.

English Letters Department Holds A General Lecture “An Overview of Australia and Indonesia from Language and Culture Perspectives”

A General Lecture

Saturday, December 7, 2013, English Letters Department, Faculty of Literature, Culture and Communication, held A General Lecture “An Overview of Australia and Indonesia from Language and Culture Perspectives”. The Keynote Speaker, Garry Jennings, from Australia, presented An Overview of Australian English, while Ida Puspita, S.S., M.A.Res., a lecturer of English Letters Department who took her master in Australia, presented her living and studying experience in Australia as an Indonesian and Muslim Student. The participants of the general lecture were not only English Letters students but also students from other study programs. They enthusiastically asked questions. It seems that they are interested to study in Australia.

Pofessional Development for UAD Lecturers

After delivering “Text and Context: A Postcolonial Equation” on Guest Lecturing held by Faculty of Literature, Culture, and Communication, and English Education study program of UAD on Friday, April 19, 2013, this morning A/Prof. Tony Simoes da Silva (Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and FEC Chair, School of English Literatures and Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong, Australia) gave a debriefing of professional development for UAD lecturers. That professional development was about “Local Knowledges, Transnational Pedagogies” focusing on capacity building in an academic institution, teaching and learning, career planning and developing a research profile, keeping balance of academic job description, and establishing a research profile. Held at Kampus 2 UAD, the lecturers attending this program were from Faculty of Literature, Culture, and Communication, English Education study program, and English Education Master Program of UAD. They were so glad to get those kind of information that could improve their knowledge and their teaching and research skill. (Eci)
