Celebrating the Lunar New Year of 2566 (IMLEK) and Cap Go Meh, some Chinese Students of UAD together with Hoo Hap Hwee Community Yogyakarta performed “Barongsai” at the Opening of Pekan Budaya Tionghoa Yogyakarta X (PBTY) (Tenth Chinese Cultural Week) at Ketandan Chinatown Malioboro, March 1, 2015. The Hoo Hap Hwee Barongsai team were the first team among 15 other Barongsai teams in the parade line.
The students of UAD who joined the performance were Qin Futai, Wang Gefan, Lu Shunbo, Zhang Zihao, Yan Xin, He Jinmeng, Fu Yan, Zhang Xinxin, Jiang Jiguang, Chen Changhua, and Li Kunpeng. The 11 Chinese students currently study at Management, Development Economics and Indonesian Literature at UAD. Together with about 30 members of Hoo Hap Hwee Community Yogyakarta, they practiced to play “Barongsai” twice a week for two months from January.
Qin Futai (Mario) expressed his happiness to experience celebrating New Year in Indonesia especially in Yogyakarta. Even though he could be with his family in China in this New Year, he was not sad at all. He feels that Chinese descendants, especially the youths, in Indonesia, learn and preserve Chinese culture better than original Chinese in China. The Chinese Cultural Week this year carries the theme “Knitting together Cultures, Creating Unity” (Merajut Budaya, Merenda kebersamaan), reflecting the wide diversity of cultures that exist both in China as in Indonesia.
