UAD International Student Graduation Gala 2025: The Timun Emas Drama Becomes a Symbol of Cross-Cultural Friendship
Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) once again affirms its position as a globally-minded campus by holding the 2025 Graduation Gala for its international students.
Held at the Hall of UAD Campus IV on Wednesday (June 11, 2025), this event, initiated by the Office of International Affairs (KKUI), became a joyful yet emotional moment to bid farewell to 31 international students who have completed their studies at UAD.
The event was officially opened by UAD Rector, Muchlas, who expressed his deep appreciation for the students’ achievements.
In his speech, Muchlas stated that the presence of international students is an essential part of the multicultural and inclusive campus life.
He also announced UAD’s plan to provide a dedicated collaboration space for international students, equipped with psychological services, an art room, and coworking spaces as a form of support for their expression and comfort during their studies.
“We are truly grateful to have accompanied these international students to this graduation milestone. May your learning experience at UAD be a valuable asset for your next journey, wherever you go,” he said.
The Head of KKUI, Ulaya Ahdiani, also expressed her gratitude for the collaboration between the university leadership, lecturers, and all international students.
She emphasized that differences in background are not barriers to becoming one family. “Our skin colors are different, our languages and religions are not the same, but we are all one family at UAD. Thank you for being part of this journey,” she stated.
The Graduation Gala was not just a farewell ceremony, but also a celebration of togetherness and cultural exchange. The highlight of the evening was the performance of the traditional folklore drama “Timun Emas” by the international students.
Dressed in traditional Indonesian costumes and delivering their lines in various international accents, the students brought the classic Indonesian tale to life in a unique and touching way.
The atmosphere turned emotional as this story, deeply rooted in Indonesian culture, was performed by faces from all over the world.
The stage was also enlivened by performances of traditional dances such as Bedhaya and Siji Loro Telu, poetry readings, and regional songs, all enthusiastically presented by the international students.
These performances showed that throughout their studies at UAD, the international students not only gained academic knowledge but also deeply immersed themselves in the richness of Indonesian culture.
Fatimah, a doctoral student from Timor Leste, shared her heartfelt experience. She said she was touched by the strong sense of family she felt throughout her time at UAD.
“I am proud to study here. When I first arrived, I thought Indonesia would be like other countries, tending to be individualistic, but it turned out to be very friendly and empathetic. I truly felt accepted,” she said.
Tiwi, a student from China, also shared a similar experience. She felt that the learning environment at UAD was very supportive, with open and friendly lecturers and classmates. She said she gained many valuable experiences, including participating in the community service program, Kuliah Kerja Nyata.
The 2025 Graduation Gala stands as proof that UAD not only provides a high-quality academic space but also offers life experiences rich in cultural and humanitarian values.
