Indonesia Language for Foreigners (BIPA)

Bahasa Indonesia Bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) is an Indonesian language program specifically designed for international participants who wish to learn the Indonesian language while gaining a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s culture, traditions, and society.

At Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD), the BIPA Program is conducted in collaboration with the Ahmad Dahlan Language Center (ADLC) to provide an interactive, communicative, and immersive learning experience. In addition to classroom instruction, participants engage in cultural activities that allow them to practice Bahasa Indonesia in authentic, real-life situations.

The program is open to international students, exchange students, scholarship recipients, researchers, professionals, expatriates, and anyone interested in developing their Indonesian language skills for academic, professional, or personal purposes.


Program Objectives

The BIPA Program aims to:

  • Develop participants’ proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia through practical and communicative learning.
  • Introduce Indonesia’s rich culture, traditions, and way of life.
  • Enhance participants’ intercultural communication skills.
  • Support academic and professional needs through Indonesian language education.

Learning Activities

The BIPA Program integrates language instruction with cultural experiences, enabling participants to practice Bahasa Indonesia in meaningful contexts.

Language Skills

Participants will develop the following language competencies:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Indonesian Grammar

Cultural Learning

Beyond classroom instruction, participants will experience Indonesian culture through various activities, including:

  • Cultural outing classes in Yogyakarta.
  • Indonesian arts and cultural workshops.
  • Traditional craft and cultural experiences.
  • Community interaction with local residents.
  • Practical use of Bahasa Indonesia in everyday situations.

This immersive approach helps participants improve their language proficiency while gaining firsthand experience of Indonesian culture.


Proficiency Levels

The BIPA Program is available for learners at different proficiency levels based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):

A1 – Beginner A2 – Elementary B1 – Intermediate
B2 – Upper Intermediate C1 – Advanced C2 – Proficient

Participants will be placed in the appropriate level based on their language proficiency or placement assessment.
